    Anyone been there?

Can you recommend a good travel guide?

And what's a good study guide for learning Spanish? =)

    Barcelona

There's always the Fodors book. But Barcelona is not Spanish (Castilian), they speak Catalan there. A language that is somewhat a mixture of Spanish/French/Italian.

Yeah, Catalan generally sounds Spanish but when they started counting I thought it was French! It's quite confusing to listen to. Since most people aren't used to hearing Catalan, you'll think they're speaking Spanish/French with a bad accent.

Another Spanish language is Basco, used in the Basque region. When I listened to it, it's totally far from Spanish or Catalan, being a non-Latin-based tongue.

Barcelona is actually a MUCH BETTER place than Madrid. It seems to have more culture than most major cities of Spain. Think of Barcelona as Cebu and Madrid as Manila. There's some sort of rivalry between these two cities. If Cebuanos hate Tagalog and would much rather have Cebuano to be national tongue and Cebu to be the capital, Barcelona also wants to be the captial and Catalan to be the national language. They also hate the national language but like the Cebuanos, they understand it too.

Oh and one more thing....girls from Barcelona are SO MUCH HOTTER than girls from Madrid. OMG they're like girls from Lyon, France!!! Typical look nina Penelope Cruz, Angelina Jolie, or LANA OF SMALLVILLE!!!

Sorry di ako makatigil bigalang nag-flood yung memories ko of Europe. lol

I have relatives in Madrid, and I don't know if they've been to the Catalonia (Catalunya) Region yet. But yeah, seems like Barcelonians are prettier/cooler and better looking than Madrileños. Parang carefree are mga Catalans whereas, lazy and somewhat snotty ang mga Castilians.

What is it like in Madrid? I'll be there on a scholarship for 9months starting this Oct. What's the weather like, the people, culture, etc...

I beg to disagree. Of all the Spanish places I have been, Barcelona feels the least Spanish (maybe because of the Catalan issue). If you want to experience Spanish culture at its finest, go to Seville. You will hardly find it in Barcelona. Don't get me wrong, Barcelona was awesome. I love Barcelona but it lacks the Spanish culture found in other cities such as Madrid and Seville.

Anyway, cool! So, you have also backpacked around Europe, I assume?

¿Estudió usted en España? en Madrid? Estaré allí este octubre en una beca. ¿Cómo encontró usted un lugar para permanecer? ¿Puede recomendar usted cualquiera/en alguna lúgar? That's my biggest problem as of the moment, aside from the language... ¡Gracias!

By the way, I'm not familiar with the past tense in Spanish so I'll be doing it in present tense. Necesito estudiar mas.

    Anyway...
No, estudio el espanyol en Canada por un semestre (4 meses). So, I can't recommend where you can stay in Spain.

By the way, which university will you be studying Spanish in? Salamanca? When I was there, I met a lot of students who went there to study Spanish.

    Hasta luego y buena suerte.

Yeah well, since you are coming from Norway, it won't be a surprise that Spain would be really cheap for you. The more northern you go in Europe, the more expensive it gets.
